Our relations with Iran go back more than 500 years now. The role of the Embassy of Portugal is to consolidate and deepen this secular interaction, contributing to a better reciprocal knowledge between our people and to foster bilateral cooperation between both States in matters of common interest.
In 2021, for the fourth time, Portugal will hold the local Presidency of the European Union, from 1st January to the end of the month of June, in the absence of an EU Delegation in Tehran. We hope to fulfil this task successfully, in full coordination with our partners, with the same.
The Ambassador of Portugal in Tehran, Carlos Costa Neves, presented on 29 September 2020 his credential letters to H.E. Dr. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In that ceremony, the two sides recalled the ancient relations between Portugal and Iran, dating back more than 500 years, and exchanged views on the development of bilateral ties between both countries in the near future.
The Ambassador of Portugal in Tehran, Carlos Costa Neves, presented last Sunday the copies of his letter of credence to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Javad Zarif. In that meeting, both recalled the historical links between the two countries, which date back more than 500 years, and discussed the future perspectives for the development of bilateral relations between Portugal and Iran, broaching also upon the next Portuguese Presidency of the European Union.
